The longitudinal mediating effect of happiness in the relationship between grit and life satisfaction among South Korean adolescents
摘要
This study examined the longitudinal pathways through which grit influences life satisfaction among South Korean adolescents, focusing on the mediating role of happiness. Using data from the 2018 Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS 2018), a nationally representative sample was tracked across three waves: Wave 1 (Grade 7; 1st year of middle school), Wave 2 (Grade 8), and Wave 3 (Grade 9). An autoregressive mediation model was employed to assess the structural relationships among grit, happiness, and life satisfaction while controlling for the temporal stability of each variable. The results indicated that grit at Wave 1 positively predicted life satisfaction at Wave 3, demonstrating a significant direct longitudinal effect. However, the indirect effect through happiness at Wave 2 was not statistically significant. These findings suggest that grit’s contribution to long-term well-being is robust and functions independently of transient emotional states during early adolescence. The results highlight the importance of fostering perseverance toward long-term goals as a core mechanism for enhancing adolescent well-being. Implications for educational interventions aimed at building sustainable psychological resources in the South Korean academic context are discussed.
