Others have wasted my time: the linkage between zero-sum mindset and wasted time perceptions
摘要
Does the belief that one’s gain must come at another’s expense lead individuals to perceive others as wasting their time? This study investigates whether and how the zero-sum mindset is associated with individuals’ perceptions of wasted time. A sample of 351 Chinese adults completed measures of zero-sum mindset, hostile attribution bias, and wasted time perceptions. Correlation analysis indicated that zero-sum mindset was positively associated with hostile attribution bias (r = .398), time urgency (r = .422), and wasted time perception (r = .340). Mediation analysis showed that the zero-sum mindset was associated with wasted time perception indirectly via hostile attribution bias (β = 0.051, 95%CI [0.013, 0.095]) and time urgency (β = 0.175, 95%CI [0.123, 0.231]). These findings uncover the cognitive pathways that give rise to the perceptions of wasted time and offer new insights into how zero-sum mindsets fuel interpersonal tension and erode cooperative social dynamics.
