<p>Based on Self-Determination Theory, this research explored the components of autonomous motivation and developed a questionnaire on autonomous motivation that reflects individual traits. Study 1 developed an Autonomous Motivation Questionnaire (AMQ) through structural conceptualization. After item analysis and exploratory factor analysis of 296 students in China, researchers finally determined AMQ has 14 items, and contained four dimensions: interest, willingness, identity and challenge. Study 2 sampled 635 students in China aim to validate the AMQ. The results showed that AMQ has stable structure, good reliability and validity, and measurement invariance of cross-gender. Study 3 conducted cross-sectional data collection on 3737 Chinese students and annual longitudinal data collection on 538 Chinese students for 3 years to examine the applicability of AMQ, and found that AMQ has measurement stability across-age and across-time. In conclusion, Autonomous Motivation Questionnaire exhibits good psychometric properties, and it can be used to measure the level of autonomous motivation of Chinese adolescents and youth.</p>
