Gratitude, indebtedness and psychological needs in men in the United States
摘要
This study examined whether adherence to norms of masculinity was associated with the relationship between trait gratitude and indebtedness and psychological needs, as conceptualized by Self-Determination Theory. A total of 217 men completed the online survey. Structural equation modeling showed that trait gratitude was positively associated with autonomy, competence, and relatedness, and that the masculine norm of self-reliance partially mediated the association with relatedness. Greater adherence to masculine norms was negatively associated with psychological needs. Indebtedness was negatively associated with autonomy and indirectly associated with lower relatedness through the masculine norm of self-reliance. Taken together, these results suggest that trait gratitude and indebtedness are related to psychological needs, and that adherence to masculine norms plays an important role in shaping these associations.
