摘要

Previous research has yielded inconsistent findings regarding rejectees’ prosocial and aggressive behavior toward new partners following social rejection, but the factors that may explain these divergent behaviors remain unclear. Possibility of acceptance (PA) refers to the prospect of being accepted by others and may influence rejectees’ behavioral responses. The present study aimed to investigate rejectees’ behavior toward a new dating partner with different levels of PA (high vs. low) following romantic rejection. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: romantic rejection or control condition. They then completed the Tangram Help/Hurt Task with a new dating partner characterized by either high or low PA. Results revealed a significant interaction between conditions and PA levels for prosocial behavior, but not for aggressive behavior. Moreover, rejectees displayed more prosocial behavior toward a new dating partner with high PA compared to those with low PA. These findings provide empirical evidence for the multimotive model in romantic contexts and offer new insights into romantic relationship formation.
