Hookup on dating apps: a social norm approach to compare gender differences in hookup intention among Chinese young adults
摘要
The increasing popularity of dating apps among Chinese young adults has sparked concerns about the rise of casual sex. However, the mechanism underlying this association and susceptible populations who are open to engaging in casual sex among Chinese young adults are underexplored. Through the lens of social norms, this study examined whether the relationship between dating app use and hookup intention was mediated by perceived descriptive norm (PDN) and whether PDN interacted with perceived injunctive norm (PIN) and fear of negative evaluation (FNE) to predict hookup intention. A total of 606 Chinese young adults (Mage = 23.47, SD = 2.70; 59.9% female; 81.2% heterosexual; 59.6% single) aged 18–35 years completed an online survey. We tested a series of moderated mediation models in the combined sample and two gender-specific subsamples. The results indicated that in both gender groups, dating app use consistently predicted hookup intentions via PDN. Furthermore, men with high PIN and low FNE tended to be more susceptible to the influence of PDN on hookup intention. These findings are expected to contribute to the development of norm-based interventions aimed at reducing casual sex among susceptible populations.
