Is the developmental pathway to perfectionism paved by childhood adversity?
摘要
This study uniquely evaluated and provided support for the Perfectionism Social Reaction Model by assessing changes in perfectionistic cognitions among young adults pre-pandemic to intra-pandemic and the extent to which exposure to childhood adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) were associated with changes in the frequency with which young adults had thoughts centered on the need to be perfect. Young adults (n = 195; 52% female; Mage = 22.41, SD = 1.53) completed measures of perfectionistic cognitions and ACEs at baseline along with assessments of perfectionistic cognitions at three later timepoints, which aligned with early (July to October 2020), peak (January to March 2021), and post-peak pandemic (March to April 2022). Overall, perfectionistic cognitions decreased across the study. However, greater exposure to ACEs, particularly childhood maltreatment, predicted greater perfectionistic cognitions across the pandemic.
