The relationship between enterprise social media affordances and followership: the role of job embeddedness
摘要
Many companies have begun to adopt new ways of working (e.g., remote work) and to accelerate their digital transformation. In this context, enterprise social media (ESM) has been introduced in the workplace as an effective option for organizations. However, the role of ESM remains debatable, and its relationship with employees is unclear. This study intends to explore the relationship between ESM and followership from affordance and relational lenses. Data from a three-wave survey of 258 respondents were analyzed using partial least squares–structural equation modeling. Four ESM affordances (i.e., visibility, persistence, editability, and association) were found to play a positive role in job embeddedness and ultimately predict followership. The findings also indicated that social relationships play a key role in the pathway of ESM usage and employee outcomes. These results derived from a relational perspective enrich the literature and offer practical guidance to organizations and employees on the effective utilization of ESM. On the basis of the findings, recommendations are proposed for ESM platforms.
