<p>With the widespread prevalence of digital technologies and social media, the speed and scope of information dissemination have increased substantially. However, this advancement has transformed public health research, making misinformation a crucial factor influencing individual health behaviors and public health policies. This scoping bibliometric review employs main path analysis (MPA), a citation network-based method, to explore the evolution of research on public health and social media misinformation from 2000 to 2023, aiming to guide future psychological and interdisciplinary inquiries. The data set comprised 600 articles (2000–2023) on social media misinformation. The key-route analysis revealed 29 pivotal articles that markedly contributed to the field. These articles constituted the core pathways for knowledge development, corresponding to three major stages, which focused on the sources and forms of misinformation, mechanisms of misinformation dissemination, and effects of misinformation on health behaviors and policies. Knowledge flow was divided into five subtopics: digital health communication and information flow, social effect of misinformation, policy interventions and digital governance, platform mechanisms and user behavior, and interdisciplinary approaches and future challenges. Grounded in the Health Belief Model, this study provides a psychologically informed, evidence-based foundation for understanding misinformation dynamics, offering unique insights for Current Psychology readers. In conclusion, this study clarifies the association between public health and misinformation, offering practical insights for academic research and policymaking. Future studies should prioritize interdisciplinary collaboration to integrate social media governance with public health strategies, thereby effectively addressing the challenges posed by misinformation.</p>
