<p>This study aimed to examine the relationship between moral foundations, particularly the Individualizing and Binding foundations associated with ideology in Moral Foundations Theory, and the well-being of Japanese individuals. In Study 1, we developed the Japanese Moral Foundations Questionnaire, which was revised to measure two different types of virtues: Individualizing and Binding foundations. In Study 2, we collected data from 796 individuals and conducted hierarchical regression analyzes to identify the unique contribution of the two moral foundations to the levels of cognitive well-being measured by the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) and affective well-being measured by the Scale of Positive and Negative Experience (SPANE), controlling for representative demographic variables. The Binding foundation was positively related to life satisfaction and positive emotions, whereas the Individualizing foundation was negatively related to life satisfaction and positively related to negative emotions. However, when ideology was measured using a one-dimensional conservative scale, neither social, economic, nor political ideological tendencies accounted for well-being.</p>
