The effectiveness of a web application (Naranj) for stress management among college students during covid-19 outbreak: a randomized clinical trial
摘要
College students experienced considerable stress during the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, highlighting the need for effective interventions. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of a stress management web application (Naranj) on perceived stress and sleep quality among college students during COVID-19 pandemic. This randomized control trial was conducted on 100 students from Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Iran. Participants were selected by systematic random sampling and assigned to the intervention and control groups, using permuted block randomization. The intervention group had access to Naranj, whereas the control group had access to a calorie’s uptake management application. The Naranj included a user profile, stress management strategies, consultation request, and COVID-19 sections. Stress management strategies were based on the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Stress Reduction Theory, and other evidence-based strategies. Data were collected using Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Visual Analog Scale, at baseline and three months after the intervention. The posttest-pretest mean difference of perceived stress was significantly lower in the intervention group -12.69(16.24) compared to the control group 0.23(5.32), p = 0.028) among MSc students. Moreover, the intervention group -3.31(5.50) had a significantly lower posttest-pretest mean difference of sleep quality compared to the control group (0.25(3.36), p = 0.003) among BSc students. The findings showed that Naranj was effective on students’ stress management among MSc students and sleep quality among BSc students. We recommend integrating similar applications into the universities’ mental health services, assessing long-term effects of the intervention and collecting biological data in future studies.
