<p>Previous research has lacked exploration into the bidirectional relationship between perceived stress (PS) and executive function (EF). This study employed a cross-lagged panel model to examine the bidirectional relationship between PS and EF among Chinese adolescents. We selected two representative provincial model senior high schools in the East China region through a convenience sampling method. Subsequently, four classes were selected from each of the two senior high schools, consisting 450 entirely of senior high year one students. A total of 320 students completed the Perceived Stress Scale and the Executive Function Scale, which includes subscales for Inhibitory Control (IC), Cognitive Flexibility (CF), and Working Memory (WM), at all three time points (June, September, and December 2023). The results revealed that at all three time points, PS exhibited bidirectional relationships with EF and its three dimensions. Furthermore, the bidirectional relationships between PS and IC, as well as CF, were more stable compared to WM. These findings support and extend the Cognitive Activation Theory of Stress, providing both a deeper understanding of the impact of stress-cognition interactions on adolescents’ psychosocial development and an empirical basis for developing intervention strategies aimed at improving stress management and executive function in adolescents.</p>
