More open, more innovative? CEOs’ openness in promoting digital transformation
摘要
With the continuous development of research on enterprise digital transformation, more and more scholars realized that top managers, especially Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), play a key role in it. However, existing research has neglected the impact of executive personality traits on digital transformation. On this basis, in our study, we try to explore the important role of CEOs’ digital leadership (especially its personality traits) in enterprise digital transformation. Based on the upper echelon theory and socially situated agency theory, we use longitudinal data from Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed enterprises between 2009 and 2021 to analyze the influence mechanism of CEO openness on enterprise digital transformation and the boundary conditions under which the mechanisms work. We find that: (1) CEO openness plays a significant positive impact on enterprise digital transformation; (2) CEO power plays a significant moderating role between CEO openness and enterprise digital transformation; (3) Enterprise redundant resources also positively moderate the relationship between CEO openness and enterprise digital transformation. Those results extend the previous literature on the antecedents of enterprise digital transformation, proves that CEOs’ characteristic has a positive effect on enterprise digital transformation. We also affirm the importance of CEOs' power and redundant resources in promoting enterprise digital transformation, which further enriches the literature on upper echelon theory and socially situated agency theory.
