<p>Social anxiety (SA) often is associated with maladaptive functioning in several domains, including cognitive representations of the self and physiological arousal. For example, individuals with SA often experience reductions in self-concept clarity (SCC) and cardiovascular functioning, particularly when visualizing themselves in social situations. Here, we examine the interactions of SCC and SA on heart rate variability (HRV) within the context of emotionally-salient mental self-imagery inductions. Participants completed self-reported questionnaires on variables of interest and engaged in positive, neutral, and negative mental self-imagery manipulations following a baseline relaxation period. HRV was extracted during these manipulations. A significant three-way interaction suggested that those who report low SCC and high SA experienced reduced HRV at baseline relative to engaging in neutral or positive mental self-imagery. Further, those who report high SCC and low SA experienced lower HRV at baseline relative to only positive mental self-imagery. Limitations, implications, and future directions are discussed.</p>
