Childhood abuse and adolescent internalizing problems: different protective factors from the school setting

Childhood abuse can bring many serious negative results, protective factors from the school setting are important to alleviate these negative effects. The present study test mediating roles of psychological needs frustration (PNF) and explore the protective effect of friendship quality (FQ) and school climate (SC). 780 high school students completed an offline survey in December 2020 in a second-tier city in southern China. Participants completed the CTQ-SF, psychological needs questionnaire, youth self-report scale, friendship quality questionnaire, and school climate scale. Results show that: (1) Psychological needs frustration mediates the relationship between childhood abuse and internalizing problems among girls; (2) High SC adolescent may show fewer internalizing problems, and high FQ girls may report lower PNF. The present study indicated that a perfect school climate and a good friendship could provide diversified protection to reduce the negative effect of childhood abuse.
