摘要

International medical graduates (IMGs) in Canada face multiple intersecting challenges with limited support systems, yet research on how they cope in clinical settings remains scarce. Applying Skinner et al.’s coping framework, we explored the coping strategies of IMGs in Alberta to advance knowledge and expand the empirical literature on this topic. Nineteen in-depth interviews were held with IMGs to gain deeper insights into their coping mechanisms. A deductive thematic analysis was used to distill the textual data into themes. IMGs employ both engagement and disengagement strategies to navigate clinical challenges. Engagement strategies—defined as proactive efforts to confront stressors include support networks and positive cognitive restructuring, while disengagement strategies, those aimed at avoiding or withdrawing from stressors, involve avoidance, rumination, and social withdrawal. While some coping mechanisms offer benefits, disengagement strategies are largely ineffective. Ultimately, addressing the root causes of IMGs’ struggles is essential. Policymakers must move beyond rhetoric and implement actionable solutions. IMGs enrich healthcare systems with valuable expertise, yet they continue to face undue challenges. Structural reforms are needed to foster inclusive and supportive environments.
