摘要

The steady increase of migrant remittances during the last decades and their potential for economic development and growth of low-medium income countries make it crucial to identify why migrants remit in times of socio-economic crisis such as during the pandemic. The present paper aims to provide an original contribution to the empirical literature on remittance determinants by exploring the role of the home and host countries and migrants’ inclusion. To this aim, we investigate which are the main determinants of Italian remittance flow at provincial levels during the 2020, focusing on socio-economic and contextual variables related to the well-being level of the migration area and the quality of life of migrants, key aspects related to SDGs. We found a positive association with the percentage of foreign residents having citizenship in one of the Least Developed Countries, the possibility to access ultra-fast internet service, the lack of education in the migrant population, the occupation rate of the migrant population, and the percentage of female municipal governors, while the association was negative with the percentage of young foreign residents and the percentage of foreign alleged offenders of crimes.
