摘要

Riding the wave of the repeal of Sect. 377A in 2022, Singaporean queer movement, Pink Dot, branded its 2023 campaign, “Celebrating All Families.” The call for the acceptance of all families comes after the constitutional enshrinement of marriage between one man and one woman which was the state’s pre-emptive move to safeguard the marital institution, following the decriminalisation of gay sex in Singapore. The family is the cornerstone of the Singapore government’s mode of regulating sexual differences. This study is interested in representations of queer configurations of family and relationships that sidestep sexual differences by doubling down on the importance of love and the family. Similar to the State’s tendency to use the family to justify its efforts against queer rights, queer individuals and the community share similar tendencies, as their own storytelling and representations in media platforms center on the importance of the family. The objective of this study is to understand how family is discursively constructed and negotiated by the State and queer individuals, becoming the anchor for collective action. Particularly, the queer community’s active and constant alignment of their stories with the State’s narrative of the family creates a repertoire of actions that set precedence for future queer representations in public, enabling cohesion between the State and its queer citizens.
