摘要

Sexting is a common behavior for youth in pursuit of romantic relationships and may function differently for singles and for those in dating relationships. Attachment style relates to sexting as a tool for alleviating anxiety for the relationship, for keeping partners or potential partners from getting too emotionally close, or as a sign of security with a partner. Fear of missing out (FoMO), a sense that others are engaging in social activities from which one is not included, may also relate to sexting. Individuals’ empathy may contribute to sexting, given that they may perceive receptivity of the partner or potential partner to engage in sexting. In this study, 195 female college students completed an online questionnaire about their attachment style, FoMO, and empathy. For singles, FoMO was a significant predictor of sexting. For those in dating relationships, attachment anxiety and empathy related to sexting. For singles, when individuals perceive they are missing out on others’ social activities, they may engage in sexting to allay unmet social needs. For couples, anxious attachment and empathy related to sexting behavior, which provides reassurance of the relationship and may occur in response to perceived cues from the partner of receptivity to sexting.
