This is a book review of XL Love by Sarah Varney. XL Love discusses the taboo intersection of obesity and sexuality through personal stories gathered from people living in the United States. Stories featured are from overweight persons discussing their experiences as well as stories of those who are in the business of helping them: physicians, researchers, scientists, psychologists, and sociologists. Varney does an excellent job of telling the stories however, the only solution this book provides for ending the oppression, stigma, and regulation of overweight and obese sexuality is for them to lose weight. In this review, we not only analyze the content but also propose alternative solutions. A shift needs to take place where, as a society, we stop focusing the dominate (normal) vs. the oppressed (abnormal) and focus on the fact that there is no normal or dominate sex. If this shift does not take place it will have long lasting implications for our society’s sexuality as a whole.
