“The moms all Agree on one Thing:” Black Women’s Perspectives on Key Agenda Items for the Next President of the United States
摘要
On August 23rd, 2024, Vice President Kamala Harris became the first Black and South Asian woman to be a major party’s presidential nominee, just 107 days before Election Day in the United States. With the announcement of Harris’ candidacy, the Biden-Harris Administration and newly formed Harris for President Campaign, alongside other Democratic grassroots organizers, immediately began devising strategies to organize and activate Black women (Ellis, 2024). This solutions-oriented brief contributes to the existing data on Americans' perspectives on the 2024 election and the key issue areas of concern by focusing specifically on 29 Black mothers’ visions for a potential Harris Administration with the knowledge that Black mothers resist oppression, envision better worlds, and create opportunities for themselves and their children. Interview data was collected days and weeks before the 2024 United States Presidential Election. Through a process of reflexive thematic analysis (Braun, Clarke, Hayfield et al. 19–38, 2023), we identified four main issue areas they wanted a Harris Administration to focus on in the first 100 days: (a) lowering the cost of everyday living, (b) ending the Israel-Palestine conflict, (c) providing universal health care to Black women and their families, and (d) ensuring all children have equitable access and opportunities to receive and pay for a high-quality education. Findings illustrate how Black mothers articulate new visions for the future that echo a long standing commitment to collective well being and continuous (re) envisioning of a world where their children, as well as other children can thrive.
