Jaworski’s Pantograph
摘要
The paper analyzes how Gary Jaworski, in his book Erving Goffman and the Cold War, deals with two thorny issues of biographical writing in the social sciences. Jaworski avoids burying his subject under excessive historical context while demonstrating how Goffman’s life and work resonate with his time. His “pantographic” method is akin to Ginzburg’s microhistory and Bourdieu’s treatment of how single empirical individuals are transformed into epistemic individuals.
