A Legacy of Scientific Time: Black Swans, Black Holes, and Black Skies in Donald Black’s Social Geometry

Donald Black provided significant ontological, epistemological, disciplinary, theoretical, and empirical advances, to the discipline of sociology and to science generally. His epistemology of pure sociology and theoretical model of social geometry were scientific black swans, achieving what others have said (and even still say) is impossible. His critics’ concerns are often epistemological black holes that distract from important opportunities to advance the theoretical model – to fill Blackian holes – not only for fruitful empirical research but also for continued development of the model itself. Ultimately, his reinvention of sociology offers impressive potentials to improve this discipline and to at least enlighten others. Creative engagement with Black’s legacy offers broad and ambitious black sky opportunities, to look well beyond the horizons not only of what sociology as a discipline could be, but to a future in which sociology might contribute to understandings of, or even solve, some of the deepest mysteries of other disciplines. In the aggregate, an approach which culminated in explanations of moral time, also achieved and exemplifies scientific time.
