Sustainable Pigment Synthesis Using Kaas Plateau Bacteria: A Green Approach for Biomedical Applications

Natural pigment were widely used in the past years however, synthetic dyes have largely replaced them despite their toxicity and harmful environmental effects. In this context, bacterial pigments offer a sustainable, biodegradable, and eco-friendly alternative with minimal risk to human health and the environment. In the present study, soil samples were collected from various locations of the Kaas plateau to isolate red and yellow pigment-producing bacteria Serratia marcescens and Exiguobacterium mexicanum. The extracted pigments were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC–MS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX). Cytotoxicity evaluation using the MTT assay showed no detrimental effects on normal cell lines, indicating the biocompatibility and safety of the pigments. The results highlight the potential of bacterial pigments as environmentally friendly alternatives to synthetic colorants. The use of renewable microbial resources for pigment production supports sustainable development and offers promising applications contributing to reduced environmental pollution and the advancement of green technologies. The bacterially synthesized natural pigments were screened for antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacterial strains. The Kaas lake isolated bacterial pigments are shown excellent antimicrobial activity.
