A Rare Case of Bezolds Abscess and Lemierre Syndrome Due to Chronic Otitis Media
摘要
Bezold's abscess, once a common complication of acute mastoiditis, has become rare due to the widespread use of antibiotics and advancements in imaging techniques. Similarly, mastoiditis now accounts for only 2.7% of Lemierre syndrome cases, reflecting a decline in severe complications related to ear infections with early diagnosis and treatment. A 35-year-old male presented with right ear discharge and decreased hearing since childhood, along with swelling over the infraaural region and anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid. Radiological investigations revealed cholesteatoma complicated by Bezold's abscess and Lemierre syndrome. The abscess was managed with incision and drainage, followed by definitive surgery under appropriate antibiotic therapy to ensure complete resolution of the infection. Bezold's abscess is a rare but serious complication of otitis media. Early diagnosis, emergency incision and drainage, followed by definitive surgery and appropriate antibiotic therapy, are crucial for effective treatment and prevention of recurrence, ensuring improved patient outcomes.
