A retrospective data analysis was performed for all patients undergoing parotidectomy in our institution from 2005 to 2023. Age, gender, smoking history, histology and date of surgery were assessed. The most common benign parotid tumor was Warthin´s tumor in 333 of 550 cases (62%) followed by pleomorphic adenoma in 166 cases (31%). The prevalence of Warthin´s tumor increased from 55.6% from 2005 to 2013 to 63.8% from 2014 to 2023. Pleomorphic adenoma decreased by 3.7%. Using data from studies providing information on population age and prevalence of benign parotid tumors, 55 years was calculated to be the age at which the most common benign parotid tumor seems to change from pleomorphic adenoma to Warthin´s tumor. In our institution the prevalence of Warthin´s tumor of the parotid gland is far higher than pleomorphic adenoma. This may be due to age dependance. We propose that Warthin´s tumor may be the most common benign parotid tumor in patients over the age of 55. Warthin´s tumor also seems to be increasing in prevalence, despite the age of patients in our study remaining stable.</p>

摘要

Pleomorphic adenoma is regularly considered to be the most common benign parotid tumor, yet in our experience, Warthin´s tumor seems far more prevalent. Therefore, a time-dependent retrospective study was performed to assess the prevalence of parotid tumors in our institution, correlate with age and determine if the prevalence of Warthin´s tumor has increased. Warthin´s tumor also seems to be increasing in prevalence, despite the age of patients in our study remaining stable.
