摘要

The purpose of the current study was to find the prevalence of probable adult cochlear implant candidates reported to a tertiary care centre. This is a retrospective study. A detailed review of 1000 case files of adult patients reported between December 2022 and February 2023 was conducted, and probable cochlear implant candidates were selected based on the pure tone average, speech identification scores, middle ear status, degree and type of hearing loss, and hearing aid trial, wherever available. The prevalence of probable cochlear implant candidates in adults reported to the centre was 5%. Of the cases reviewed, 52 ears were eligible for traditional bilateral cochlear implants, 23 ears were suitable for unilateral cochlear implants, and two ears met the criteria for electro-acoustic stimulation. The study indicates that a significant number of adults who report for audiological evaluation may be probable candidates for cochlear implants. However, the actual number of adults undergoing cochlear implants is lower in the centre. his disparity may be due to multiple contributing factors, which warrant further investigation.
