摘要

Occurrence of foreign bodies in paranasal sinuses and orbit are rare entities. Patients present with vague symptoms and usually those are discovered after extra/intracranial complications. Therefore, they may go unnoticed if there is not a strong clinical suspicion. transnasal endoscopic surgery being the most commonly used surgical approach. This study was undertaken to explore some atypical cases of sino-naso-orbital foreign bodies with their presenting symptoms and functional outcome of endoscopic surgery in relation to timely intervention. This cross-sectional study included 18 patients presented in outdoor or emergency of Otorhinolaryngology Department of a tertiary care hospital during two years tenure, who had undergone endoscopic removal of foreign bodies traversing the nose, orbit and paranasal sinuses. Inorganic foreign bodies were more commonly (66.7%) retrieved than organic foreign bodies. Septal injury was the most common (83.3%). The presenting symptoms varied according to the time of presentation. With the use of transnasal endoscopic retrieval, 55.56% of all the patients who presented within hours to days of the trauma showed remarkable improvement in their visual acuity postoperatively. Due to unusual presentations or being asymptomatic, cases of atypical sino-naso-orbital foreign bodies often missed diagnosis for indefinite period. The use of transnasal endoscopes to remove sino-naso-orbital foreign bodies improves the functional outcome and reduces ocular morbidity, while providing direct vision to remove the foreign bodies without any retained parts.
