Cartilage tympanoplasty in patients with inactive mucosal type of chronic otitis media with intact ossicular chain- our comprehensive experience at a tertiary care hospital
摘要
Cartilage is frequently used as a graft in tympanoplasty for mucosal type of COM. The aim of the study was to evaluate the outcome of cartilage tympanoplasty in terms of graft uptake and hearing improvement. This was a cross-sectional observational study conducted in the ENT department of a tertiary care hospital in patients undergoing tympanoplasty for COM - mucosal type for a duration of 18 months. The patients were evaluated with detailed clinical history & examination including otoscopic examination, PTA and X- ray bilateral mastoid (Schuller’s view) with follow up at 3 months. The study consisted of a total of 32 patients of COM- mucosal type − 25 females and 7 males. At the end of 3 months, the graft uptake was seen in 30 patients (93.75%). A statistically significant improvement was noted in: hearing at 3 months of cartilage tympanoplasty, from pre-op mean hearing loss (42.61 dB) to post-op mean hearing loss (28.60 dB) and mean air-bone conduction gap reduction from pre-op (32.88 dB) to post-op (20.12 dB). Cartilage is a reliable graft material showing significant outcome in terms of closure of tympanic membrane central perforation and hearing improvement.
