Psychogenic Stuttering in a Female Adult: A Case Report on Treatment and Outcomes
摘要
Psychogenic stuttering, a functional disorder, arises from psychological issues and lacks a clear organic cause, often linked to emotional conflicts and mental health conditions. Unlike typical stuttering, psychogenic stuttering doesn’t consistently respond to emotional triggers. An 18-year-old female developed sudden-onset stuttering at age 12 following emotionally abusive trauma. She received speech therapy twice weekly for three months using Hegde’s pause-and-talk protocol, with one-minute audio recordings taken after each session to monitor disfluency percentage. Concurrent psychological counselling addressed her depression and fear. Systematic speech therapy combined with psychological support resulted in measurable improvements in fluency, highlighting the importance of integrated management for psychogenic stuttering.
