Bone Wax: A Friend or a Foe?
摘要
Foreign body reaction to bone wax is rare but not uncommon. It is a commonly used hemostatic agent in otological surgeries in ENT. A 12-year-old boy post cochlear implant surgery came with ear pain associated with persistent ear discharge not responding to multiple intravenous antibiotics. Blood tests were normal. The ear swab was sterile. A large lump of bone wax was discovered along the posterior canal wall during exploration surgery. Postoperatively the pain, discharge and granulations resolved. The cochlear implant was functioning efficiently preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively. A high level of clinical suspicion is required in cases of non-infectious ear discharge. Herein, we report a case of foreign body reaction to bone wax used during cochlear implant surgery.
