To Evaluate the Changes in Pulmonary Function in the Patients of Symptomatic Deviated Nasal Septum (DNS) after Septoplasty, Using Objective Spirometry Measurements

To evaluate the changes in pulmonary function in patients of symptomatic deviated nasal septum (DNS) after septoplasty, using objective spirometry measurements. This prospective observational study was conducted in the Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, SMGS Hospital, Government Medical College, Jammu, from August 1, 2023, to July 31, 2024. Forty patients aged 18–59 years with symptomatic DNS and nasal obstruction were included. Exclusion criteria included nasal polyps, prior nasal surgeries, pulmonary or systemic diseases, and smoking. All patients underwent diagnostic evaluation, preoperative, and pulmonary function tests (PFTs), including FEV1, FVC, PEFR, and FEV1/FVC using the RMS Helios 702 spirometer. Septoplasty was performed under standard protocols, and PFTs were repeated at 1 and 3 months postoperatively. The cohort comprised 28 males (70%) and 12 females (30%), with a mean age of 22.6 ± 3.36 years. Statistically significant improvements were observed postoperatively in FEV1 (p < 0.001), FVC (p < 0.001), and PEFR (p < 0.001) at both 1-month and 3-month follow-ups. The FEV1/FVC ratio showed no significant change. The data suggest enhanced pulmonary performance following nasal airway correction. Septoplasty significantly improves pulmonary function in patients with symptomatic DNS, reinforcing its role as a functional intervention rather than purely cosmetic. These improvements support the utility of septoplasty in enhancing overall respiratory health. Further long-term studies are recommended to assess the durability of postoperative functional gains.
