<p>Limited research has explored the impact of HL on the risk of diabetes and depression as a mediator. Hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for diabetes events were estimated using Cox proportional hazards models. The causal mediation analysis was used to determine the mediating role of depression linking HL to diabetes. Individuals with HL had a significantly greater risk of diabetes (HR: 1.18; 95% CI: 1.06–1.32) compared to their counterparts. Including deaths during follow-up (663 participants with complete data) as a competing risk showed that participants with HL remained at an elevated risk of diabetes events (HR: 1.18; 95% CI: 1.04–1.33). Causal mediation analysis demonstrated that depression accounted for 5.70% of the effect of HL on diabetes. The study underscores the early identification of HL, which may serve as an effective strategy for diabetes prevention.</p>
