Hearing Sensitivity and Threshold in Children with Developmental and Behavioural Disorders: A Cross-Sectional Study

To evaluate hearing sensitivity and threshold in children with developmental and behavioural disorders. This cross-sectional study was carried out in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, of a tertiary care teaching hospital over a period of 18 months. 45 children aged below 14 with diagnoses of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Developmental Delay and Global Developmental Delay were included in the studyto assess their hearing threshold and sensitivity with the help of OAE, Impedance Audiometry, BERA andinterviews on hearing sensitivities. The BERA threshold in Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder was [40.0000 ± 13.2288 right] [37.1429 ± 5.6695 left], Autism spectrum disorder was [41.6667 ± 19.6850 right] [41.6667 ± 19.6850 left], DD was[36.2500 ± 9.7468 both]and in Global developmental delay was [73.8462 ± 22.0939 right] [76.5385 ± 20.9548 left].Hyperacusis was present in 2 (28.6%) participants with Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and 7 (77.8%)participants with Autism Spectrum Disorder. 3 (33.3%) participants in Autism Spectrum Disorder hadMisophonia. Children facing behavioural and developmental challenges exhibit differences in hearing sensitivity and thresholds due to their unique sensory processing profiles. Their responses to auditory stimuli may be influenced by conditions as Autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, DevelopmentalDelay and Global Developmental Delay.
