<p>To develop a cost-effective olfactory testing method using locally available odorants (lemon, peppermint, clove, and ethyl acetate) as alternatives to butanol-1 in the Connecticut Chemosensory Clinical Research Center (CCCRC) test, and to evaluate their diagnostic effectiveness. This cross-sectional study involved 82 participants recruited from an ENT clinic over eight months. Participants underwent odor threshold and identification testing using both butanol-1 and the alternative odorants. Correlation analysis, along with Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves, was used to assess the diagnostic performance of the alternative odorants. The alternative odorants showed a strong correlation with butanol-1. ROC analysis demonstrated strong diagnostic performance of all the odorants across different levels of olfactory dysfunction, comparable to butanol-1. Lemon, peppermint, clove, and ethyl acetate are effective, low-cost alternatives to butanol-1 for olfactory testing. Their availability and diagnostic reliability make them suitable for clinical use in resource-constrained settings, offering a practical solution for assessing olfactory function across diverse populations.</p>
