Long-Term Auditory and Visual Evaluation in Infants Born to Mothers with COVID-19

Aims: Investigate the possible and delayed effects of COVID-19 on the hearing and vision systems of infants born to COVID-19-positive mothers. Materials and methods: This research was a case-control study on infants born to mothers who were PCR positive for COVID-19 during delivery compared to the control group. Ear examination and screening audiometry with transient otoacoustic emission (TEOAE) were performed in the first week after birth. Then, between the ages of 12 and 24 months, the infants were re-examined in terms of corona symptoms, and the hearing threshold was measured by Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) and automated auditory brainstem response (AABR). Results: 41 infants were included with the average age of 38.1 weeks (w) ± 0.9in the initial phase (19 in the Covid group and 22 in the control group). the most common symptom in mothers in the COVID group was fever. 6 out of 19 children born to covid-positive mothers had a positive PCR test for COVID-19. However, none of the infants had symptoms at birth. The results of the hearing and visual tests were also within the normal range in all cases. Conclusion: It seems that the positivity of the mother’s or baby’s COVID-19 test does not necessarily affect the auditory and vision system.
