Exploring the Impact of Proprioceptive Training Coupled with Manual Therapy on Cervicogenic Dizziness

Purpose: Previous studies have demonstrated that Cervicogenic Dizziness with Chronic Neck Pain (CD-CNP) is a prevalent cause of dizziness. It poses challenges in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. Dizziness related to CD-CNP is a primary subcategory of cervicogenic dizziness. This study aimed to compare the effects of combined proprioception and manual therapy in patients with CD-CNP. Methods: Patients in the CD-CNP group were divided into two groups with 10 participants each. One group received 3 to 5 sessions of manual therapy, while the other received combined therapy, which included 3 to 5 sessions of manual therapy and 10 sessions of proprioception training. The independent t-test and paired t-test were used to statistically compare the effectiveness of the two treatment approaches. Results: There was a significant improvement in all measured variables after both the manual and combined therapies. Moreover, the combined therapy group showed significantly greater improvement than the manual therapy group in joint position sense error(JPSE), Smooth Pursuit, dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) score, and Dizziness VAS (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Both manual and combined therapies effectively improve balance function and proprioception. Manual therapy combined with proprioception training shows additional therapeutic effects in CD-CNP.
