Characterization of Ipsilateral Acoustic Reflex Latency Test Among Normal Hearing Individuals

A stapedius muscle contraction could be caused by intensive auditory stimulation. Moreover, acoustic reflex, an involuntary contraction of the stapedius muscle in response to intense auditory stimuli, plays a critical role in the auditory system by attenuating loud sounds and protecting the inner ear from potential damage. According to the literature, findings suggest that the acoustic reflex latency test could be used for the neuro-otological diagnosis. The present study aims to profile the ipsilateral acoustic reflex latency in individuals with normal hearing. Sixty participants (30 males and 30 females), between age range of 18–30 years were included in the study. Detailed audiological evaluation, followed by ARLT which is administered ipsilaterally on 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz and 4 kHz. Results revealed that mean latency of ON10% parameter in ARLT was observed between 83.2 and 113.5 ms. Additionally shorter latency difference Observed in 2 kHz, subsequently low frequencies were significantly prolonged while comparing high frequency. No significant difference was observed between the gender comparison. Findings of the current study demonstrated that ARLT can be used as the reliable and standardized measure to assess the temporal dynamics of the acoustic reflex.
