Effect of eucalyptus oil on symptoms of allergic rhinitis: a systematic review

This study was conducted in order to view the effect of eucalyptus oil in the treatment of allergic rhinitis by reducing allergic symptoms.
Data sourcesDatabases including PubMed, The Cochrane Library, PLOS ONE and JSTOR were searched for articles from inception to 31st December, 2023.
Study SelectionsThe criteria for selection involved clinical trials in English with full text, having patients of allergic rhinitis. Screening and selection were done according to PRISMA guidelines after registration of protocol on PROSPERO (CRD42024498763).
ResultsOut of 1772 studies searched only 3 clinical trials were included. Eucalyptus oil reduced allergic symptoms evaluated using RQLQ placebo (MD -0.40; 95% CI [-0.68, -0.12], p = 0.005) and total nasal symptom score (MD -3.86; 95% CI [-8.06, 0.34], p = 0.07). Nasal itching length exanthema and heart burn were the most common adverse effects.
ConclusionThis review showed that eucalyptus oil was beneficial in reducing the symptoms of allergic rhinitis and improving the quality of life thus providing a way for future studies to establish its dose and duration for the management of allergic rhinitis.
