The Dynamics of Poverty Among Türkiye’s Aging: An Investigative Study of Determinants
摘要
The ongoing demographic transition towards an aging population in Türkiye carries the potential to exacerbate many socioeconomic issues, particularly poverty. This study investigates the determinants of poverty among older adults in Türkiye, an area with limited research. Utilizing data from the Household Budget Survey, it focuses on individuals aged 65 and above from dependent households, with a sample size of 4,092 individuals from 3,042 households. The study employs a multidimensional approach, analyzing individual and household-level variables, including age, gender, marital status, education level, living alone status, pension receipt, and housing expenses. The logistic regression analysis used in the study revealed that poverty among older adults is influenced by a complex interplay of demographic, economic, and structural/physical characteristics. Key factors such as gender, education status, and living alone status significantly impact poverty risk. Surprisingly, the risk of poverty decreases with age, and men face a higher risk compared to women. The study highlights the multifaceted nature of poverty among older adults in Türkiye. The findings suggest the need for targeted policy interventions to address the economic, social, and structural factors contributing to poverty in this demographic. Enhanced understanding of these determinants can inform strategies to mitigate poverty among Türkiye’s aging population.
