Spatial Impact of the Third Spaces on Enterprise Innovation, Mechanism and Implications: A Case Study of Shanghai
摘要
Cities are hubs of innovation, with third spaces playing a crucial role in fostering an urban atmosphere conducive to creativity and innovation. This paper examines the spatial impact of third spaces, represented by Cafés, on the agglomeration of enterprise innovation in Shanghai. By matching the points of interest (POI) data on Cafés from Dianping.com in 2020 in Shanghai with the patent application data of the industrial and commercial enterprises, we find the that: (1) A spatial positive correlation exists between the presence of Cafés and enterprise innovation. (2) The impact of Cafés on the agglomeration of enterprise innovation exhibits spatial heterogeneity, with Cafés in the peripheral areas of Shanghai having a greater positive effect on innovation. (3) The specific impact range of Cafés on the agglomeration of enterprise innovation is 400 m. Compared to design patents and utility model patents, the impact range of Cafés on invention patents is larger. (4) In the mechanism test, we use data on the citations of enterprise patents to verify that Cafés can influence the agglomeration of enterprise innovation by promoting knowledge spillover effect. By studying the spatial correlation between Cafés and enterprise innovation, this paper aims to deepen the understanding of how third spaces affect the agglomeration of enterprise innovation in China and other developing countries. The findings of this study can provide valuable insights for urban planning and urban design policies, advocating for the consideration of spatial layouts of third spaces and other urban amenities to promote a more innovative atmosphere and higher spatial quality within cities.
