<p>Against the backdrop of growing challenges facing mothers, this article examines the expectations placed on mothers and those held by mothers themselves. Essentially, these expectations involve mothers being child-centred and present, and being happy with this role. At the same time, various collective and individual strategies point to the utopian nature of this social norm.</p>
