<p>This article deals with the question of what constitutes a&#xa0;case in social work. The challenges associated with this question have been prominently discussed in contributions to social work since the beginning of the 20th&#xa0;century at the latest. Based on classic case work, a&#xa0;case can and must be more than just the consideration of the individual. Based on the social integration of the addressees, they are exposed to social inequalities, institutional-organizational, spatial, socio-political and socio-legal conditions. Casework therefore represents both a&#xa0;social space and a&#xa0;structural or content-related task of social work. This article argues that casework should be understood as a&#xa0;circular process and that the paradoxes and antinomies that constantly arise should not be seen as blockages, but as challenges to be overcome.</p>

This article deals with the question of what constitutes a case in social work. Based on classic case work, a case can and must be more than just the consideration of the individual.
