<p>The subject of this article is the suitability of picture books for teaching children aged three to six about death and grief. It examines whether current children’s books correspond to the current state of scientific knowledge and are designed to be suitable for children. Four exemplary titles were analysed on the basis of criteria such as age-appropriate understanding of death, stimulation of conversation and confrontation with the topic. Only one book fulfils these requirements. The article concludes that not every picture book is suitable for teaching these sensitive topics and recommends that parents make a&#xa0;careful selection. Finally, assessment criteria are suggested to support parents in their selection.</p>
