<p>The electromagnetic launcher (EML) is an advanced technology with the potential to replace traditional launch mechanisms. Railguns, coil guns and Thomson coil launchers are common EML configurations. Numerous studies and research have been conducted on coil guns, suggesting that coil guns can be a better choice for defence and industrial applications. Despite the substantial evidence supporting coil guns as a viable option, their performance is hindered by a lack of knowledge and limited studies in certain design aspects, such as the structure of the armature and projectile, trigger and crowbar circuits and armature stabilization. This paper mainly focuses on reviewing various design aspects along with the available research areas to enhance the performance of coil guns.</p>
