<p>Solar dryers give a solution to global energy crises and food waste but are criticised due to their uncontrolled and intermittent operating behaviour. To address these concerns, a cabinet type direct hybrid domestic solar dryer (HDSD) has been developed and tested under passive and active modes. The maximum unload temperature of the HDSD for stagnation, passive and active modes were 102.6, 61.8 and 58.6°C, respectively. The HDSD alleviated the moisture content of potato (<i>Solanum tuberosum</i>) slices from 85% to 6.98 and 9.20% (wb) under passive and active modes, respectively. Midilli-Kucuk model described the drying behaviour (coefficient of correlation: 0.9995 to 0.9999) of potato slices under both modes. The thermal, economic and environmental indicators were improved with increased sample mass for both modes. The HDSD under passive mode was found much desirable for potato slices drying. The output behaviour of HDSD varied linearly with the sample mass.</p>
