<p>R. Rajaraman was a versatile physicist who contributed to many areas of research in physics and also to public policy. In this essay, we discuss his academic contributions to theoretical physics, including quantum field theory and its application to particle, nuclear, and condensed matter physics, as well as his later work on nuclear disarmament, nuclear safety and security.</p>
