<p>Prof.Sulochana Gadgil was at the forefront of the revolution that occurred in monsoon science during the last 60 years. This revolution was driven by advances in satellite technology and computers. She showed that the land-sea contrast in surface temperature was not the major driving force for the seasonal variation of monsoon rainfall. She was the Chairman of the Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science from 1989 to 1996. The transition from statistical prediction to numerical prediction of monsoon rainfall (based on laws of physics) in India occurred because of her leadership.</p>
