<p>Wolfgang Haken (1928–2022) was a German American mathematician who made pathbreaking contributions to topology and graph theory, most notably the discovery of an algorithm to recognize the unknot and (with Kenneth Appel) the solution to the four-colour problem.</p><p>In this article, we outline some of Haken’s ideas and results, mainly focusing on his contributions to topology.</p>

In this article, we outline some of Haken’s ideas and results, mainly focusing on his contributions to topology.
