Comparative thermal study of octadecane-based shape-stable materials for thermal energy storage

Phase-change materials (PCMs) are proving to be a centre of attraction for the scientific community due to their ability to store thermal energy, thereby resolving the energy crisis issue. The present work is an attempt to investigate the shape stability and the thermal properties of octadecane/polypyrrole and octadecane/silica composite PCMs; consisting of different weight percentages of polypyrrole and silica, respectively. A direct melt-mixing route has been used to synthesise composite PCMs. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron spectroscopy (FE-SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) have been used to investigate various properties of the prepared composites.
